Purpose
To establish summer compensation rates and scheduling procedures for full-time and part-time faculty members teaching in-person, hybrid, and/or online (World Campus or Web) courses.
Guidelines
Full-time faculty members teaching during the summer will receive salary compensation of $125 per credit per student for 0-400 level courses and $150 per credit per student for courses at the 500 level and above, up to a maximum of $7,500 for a 3-credit course. For courses carrying fewer or more than 3 credits, the maximum will be prorated accordingly.
Part-time faculty members teaching during the summer will receive salary compensation of $125 per credit per student for 0-400 level courses and $150 per credit per student for courses at the 500 level and above, up to the compensation per credit maxima based upon credentials and experience set by the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs (currently outlined in memorandum of November 13, 2019). This maxima will be referred to as Adjunct Faculty Compensation Rate (AFCR) in this document.
For cases where the enrollment does not allow the maximum compensation ($7,500 for full-time faculty or AFCR), whether taught by full-time or part-time faculty: (1) the Director of the School offering the course may cancel the course; (2) per approval of the Director of the School offering the course, the faculty member assigned to the course may teach the course at a reduced salary that is computed using the per credit per student compensation formula above. If the assigned faculty member teaching the course does not wish to teach the course at such a reduced salary, the School Director offering the course may assign the course to another faculty member; (3) in rare and exceptional situations, additional compensation (which is not to exceed the maxima outline above) may be authorized by the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs based upon written justification from the relevant program and support from the relevant School Director. If possible, such decisions should be conveyed to the faculty member at least three days prior to the start of the relevant summer session.
Full-time faculty members who are teaching during the summer are expected to fulfill the professional responsibilities of a full-time faculty member.
Tenure-eligible faculty members (i.e., during provisional appointment) should be dissuaded from teaching during the summer sessions, but may be permitted to do so upon recommendation and justification from the School Director, and with the approval of the Sr. Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. All questions regarding compensation should be referred to the School Director.
