Students reap honors in IEEE competitions

In the largest regional competition of its type in a seven-state area, Penn State Harrisburg electrical engineering students have walked away with top honors.

Held in concert with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Student Activities Conference at Temple University, the competitions involved 22 colleges and universities. Penn State Harrisburg electrical engineering and electrical engineering technology students earned first, second and third places.

Awards, honors continue for Kelsey Kerr

Hummelstown resident Kelsey Kerr has capped her award-winning academic career at Penn State Harrisburg with another prestigious University honor.

A senior Information Sciences and Technology major who will graduate in May, Kerr has been named only the sixth Penn State Harrisburg undergraduate to win the Ralph Dorn Hetzel Memorial Award. Named for Penn State’s 10th president, the award recognizes high scholastic attainment and good citizenship and leadership in student activities.

Pa. Treasurer to deliver commencement keynote

Treasurer of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Rob McCord will deliver the keynote address at Penn State Harrisburg’s spring commencement Saturday, May 15. More than 500 undergraduate and graduate degrees will be conferred during the 9:30 a.m. ceremonies in the Giant Center, Hershey.

Christine Sears promoted by Penn National Insurance

Chair of Penn State Harrisburg’s Board of Advisers Christine Sears has been promoted to executive vice president and COO of Penn National Insurance.

A 1977 Penn State Harrisburg graduate with a degree in business, Sears had served as the Harrisburg-based Penn National Insurance executive vice president and CEO since 2007.

36 students join Beta Gamma Sigma

Thirty-six undergraduate and graduate students in Penn State Harrisburg’s School of Business Administration have achieved excellence in their studies and earned membership invitations to Beta Gamma Sigma, the national business honor society.

Chamber to honor Black Student Union

The work of Penn State Harrisburg’s Black Student Union (BSU) to expand awareness of the value of diversity in education and in the community is being formally recognized by the African American Chamber of Commerce of Central Pennsylvania.

The BSU will receive the Youth Achievement Award at the organization’s 18th annual celebration May 28 at the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg.

Satellite has found 500 of the biggest explosions in the universe

NASA's Swift satellite, whose science and flight operations are controlled from Penn State's Mission Operations Center in State College, Pa., has detected its 500th gamma-ray burst -- a type of explosion that is the biggest and most mysterious in the cosmos. Swift's X-ray telescope and ultraviolet/optical telescope were developed and built by international teams led by Penn State.

April 27 concert to feature local musician, high school choir

Penn State Harrisburg’s Capital College Choir will present its annual spring concert Tuesday, April 27 at 5:15 p.m. in the Morrison Gallery, located in the campus library.

The program, titled “Fiddlin’ Around,” will feature local professional violin teacher, soloist, and symphony member Carl Iba in selected works written for choir and violin, in addition to the Concert Choir of Lower Dauphin High School.

M.S. in Electrical Engineering added to list of graduate programs

Professionals seeking graduate study in electrical engineering now have two choices at Penn State Harrisburg.

Building on its established Master of Engineering program in electrical engineering, the college now is offering a Master of Science program in electrical engineering with an expanded research focus to address the needs of full-time students.
