Eco-friendly residence hall opens on campus

Penn State Harrisburg’s new residence hall, which opened this fall, is the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)-certified residential building within Penn State. The 30,000-square-foot structure houses 100 first-year students, bringing the total number of students living on campus to 430. 

Greenhouse groundbreaking

Greenhouse construction begins

Penn State Harrisburg has begun construction of a specialized 3,500-square-foot greenhouse complex, the first phase of a planned $1.6 million biotechnology research and teaching facility. A September 16 groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of the greenhouse project, expected to be completed late this year.

Ruiz recognized for achievements in criminal justice

James M. Ruiz, associate professor of criminal justice at Penn State Harrisburg, recently received a regional award for outstanding accomplishments in teaching and significant contributions to criminal justice education.

The Northeastern Association of Criminal Justice Sciences recognized Ruiz with the 2010 Regional Fellow Award, one of four awards presented at the association’s annual meeting in Portsmouth, R.I.

On the heels of another oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico, this one on September 2, three Penn State experts will discuss the consequences and responses to the Gulf Coast oil spill during a moderated panel session at Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday, September 8.

Donations in honor of former chancellor bolster Penn State Harrisburg scholarship fund

Private donations of more than $430,000 during a 30-day period this summer have enabled Penn State Harrisburg to bolster its Board of Advisers Endowed Scholarship Fund and to name its executive boardroom in honor of former chancellor, Madlyn L. Hanes. The boardroom, located in the college’s Olmsted Building, was dedicated August 18 as part of All-College Day activities.

Lester Felician named head men’s soccer coach

Lester Felician has been named the Penn State Harrisburg Head Men’s Soccer Coach beginning in the fall 2010 season. Felician comes to Penn State Harrisburg with tremendous experience having played professionally, both within the United States and in his home country of Trinidad and Tobago.
