Young Writers Academy returning to campus

A workshop with guest author Gordon Korman will highlight the Young Writers Academy at Penn State Harrisburg, June 21 to 25.

Hosted by the college’s Capital Area Writing Project, the Young Writers Academy is a week-long enrichment program for school students interested in exploring a variety of writing genres. Instructed by National Writing Project Fellows, the academy is open to students in grades 4 to 12. Each participant will receive a writing journal and one of Korman's books.

Faculty member lectures at University of West Indies

Associate Professor of Mathematics and Statistics Winston A. Richards was one of two international presenters at the recent Statistics Week celebration at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad.

A frequent visitor to the university, Richards lecture topic was “Systematic Sampling to the Rescue.” The other presenter was Stanford University faculty member Ingram Olkin.

Mukund Kulkarni named interim chancellor

Mukund Kulkarni, senior associate dean for academic affairs at Penn State Harrisburg, has been named interim chancellor at Penn State Harrisburg, effective July 1. He replaces Madlyn Hanes, who will take over July 1 for the retiring John Romano as vice president for Commonwealth Campuses.

Kulkarni joined Penn State Harrisburg as a member of the business faculty in 1985, and currently holds the rank of professor of finance. From 1996-2006 he served as director of the School of Business Administration at the campus. Under his leadership, the school experienced significant growth and received its initial AACSB accreditation. Kulkarni also was part of the inter-college leadership team that developed the iMBA, which has realized significant growth on behalf of the broader University.

Choral workshop, concert featuring the ‘Hi-Los’ March 31

A workshop involving three local high schools plus a free evening public concert featuring Penn State’s acclaimed “Hi-Lo’s” highlight a day of choral music Wednesday, March 31 at Penn State Harrisburg.

Students from Lower Dauphin, Central Dauphin, and Hershey high schools will participate in a 10:15 a.m. workshop led by Penn State Associate Professor of Music Christopher Kiver in the Capital Union Building on campus.

James Ruiz earns national mentoring award

For more than a decade, Penn State Harrisburg Associate Professor of Criminal Justice James Ruiz has gained a stellar reputation for his commitment to mentor students during their time at the college – and following graduation.

The Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences formally recognized that dedication when it recently presented Ruiz its 2010 Outstanding Mentor Award during the annual conference in San Diego.

Documentary workshop and film showing March 26

Penn State Harrisburg's School of Humanities is sponsoring a March 26 workshop with the documentary film director Laurie Chock and Toni Maloney, co-founder and CEO of Bpeace (Business Council for Peace) for students, alumni, and staff who are interested in documentary media production for nonprofit organizations.

Lancaster artist’s work on exhibit through May 16

The works of Lancaster artist and educator Jay Noble are on public display through May 16 in the Morrison Gallery of Penn State Harrisburg’s library.

Entitled “Carousel,” the exhibit is free and open to the public Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Friday.

Former deputy director of homeland security to speak on campus

Former deputy director of homeland security and U.S. Coast Guard commandant Admiral James M. Loy will deliver a free presentation March 29 as Penn State Harrisburg continues its year-long celebration of Public Administration programming milestones.

Loy’s presentation, “Leadership in Public Service and Homeland Security,” will be at 7 p.m. in the Morrison Gallery of the college library.

African American quilters focus of March 24 lecture

The March 24 installment in Penn State Harrisburg’s Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Lecture Series will feature a scholar’s look at quilters in the African American community.

Patricia Turner, author of Crafted Lives: Stories and Studies of African American Quilters, will deliver her free public lecture at 6:30 p.m. in the Gallery Lounge of Olmsted Building on campus.
