MIDDLETOWN, Pa. — Penn State Harrisburg will host its inaugural MLK Day “I Have a Dream” High School Basketball Classic on Monday, Jan. 20, 2025, on campus. The event will celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. through community, competition and inspiration.

The event will feature four local high school teams: Central Dauphin East vs. Northeastern High School for the girls’ game, and Gettysburg High School vs. Middletown High School for the boys’ game.

Penn State Harrisburg invites students, families and the local community to attend and cheer on the teams.

Admission is free. Attendees are asked to bring non-perishable food items to be donated to local food banks.

Game Schedule:

  • 3 p.m.: Girl's Game Tip-Off — Central Dauphin East vs. Northeastern High School
  • 5 p.m.: Boy's Game Tip-Off — Gettysburg High School vs. Middletown High School

“Dr. King’s values of unity, perseverance and excellence align with the spirit we foster at Penn State Harrisburg,” said David M. Callejo Pérez, chancellor of Penn State Harrisburg. “This event will provide a unique opportunity for student athletes to compete, connect with mentors, and learn from one another in an environment that encourages growth and collaboration.”

In addition to the games, the high school student athletes will enjoy a full day of enriching experiences, including a luncheon with keynote speaker Leon Caldwell, an award-winning scholar-activist with nearly three decades of experience creating innovative solutions for Black and other historically marginalized communities.

Players will also participate in a Q&A session with Penn State Harrisburg’s men’s and women’s basketball teams and the college’s Office of Admissions, gaining insights into academic and athletic opportunities.

“This event is about more than basketball; it’s about building connections and celebrating the potential of young athletes in our community,” said Rahsaan Carlton, athletic director at Penn State Harrisburg. “We are thrilled to support and inspire these students, who are our future leaders both on and off the court.”
