Harrisburg Huddle: Episode 103 Teaching and Curriculum

As part of our land grant mission, Penn State Harrisburg is committed to both training new teachers and helping working teachers grow and advance in their careers. In this episode of the Harrisburg Huddle podcast, Dr. Jane Wilburne sat down with Olivia Weidemann, a teacher at Milton Hershey School and graduate of the Master of Education in Teaching and Curriculum program at Penn State Harrisburg. Together, they discussed how the program helped her in her career and the students that she serves.

The Master of Education degree in Teaching and Curriculum is designed to enhance the skills of PreK–12 teachers for public and private schools. The program focuses on four essential components of effective education: learning, curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The Teaching and Curriculum Program conforms to the guidelines for teacher quality and is unified by its vision of critical thinking, democracy, diversity, life-long learning, nurturance, and scholarship.

The M.Ed. in Teaching and Curriculum program will enhance your ability to: 

  • Communicate effectively with students, families, colleagues, and administrators
  • Conduct instructional programs that provide a sound intellectual and emotional climate for learning
  • Implement a variety of teaching methods, materials, and content
  • Interpret and assess educational literature and research
  • Evaluate major issues and current trends in instructional curriculum practice and development

In addition to completing the core requirements, graduate students may choose from various areas of specialization, including special education, early childhood education, literacy, English as a second language, and math education. Courses are offered in multiple formats, including online, remote blended, hybrid, and in-person.

Teaching Certificate Program

Penn State Harrisburg also offers initial teacher certification programs for post-baccalaureate students in elementary education, secondary English, mathematics, science, social studies, and special education.
