IST student receives University award

Toan V. Ngo, a senior information science and technology major at Penn State Harrisburg, has been named one of two recipients of Penn State’s 2011 Ralph Dorn Hetzel Memorial Award.

Named for the University’s tenth president, the award recognizes a combination of high scholastic attainment, good citizenship, and participation and leadership in student activities.

One of the region’s most extensive summer educational endeavors, Penn State Harrisburg’s Summer Youth Program returns this year with a range of programs, from “Glee” camp to beginner martial arts to designing computer games.

Symposium to showcase student research

Penn State Harrisburg students will present their research projects on topics ranging from organic roofing materials to word-of-mouth advertising on Facebook during the 6th Annual Student Symposium, Friday, April 8 from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. in the Olmsted Building’s Gallery Lounge.

The symposium provides students with an opportunity to present their research and other scholarly and creative works and to encourage them to communicate about their work with others.

American Studies conference to explore public heritage issues

Former Pennsylvania budget secretary Mary Soderberg and leaders from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, the state House of Representatives, and the Maryland Arts Council will address heritage funding, politics, and programming during the 2011 Annual Conference of the Middle Atlantic American Studies Association April 8 and 9 at the Pennsylvania State Capitol.

Hate crime victim to raise awareness April 5

Filmmaker and hate crime victim Erin Davies will bring the story of her vandalized Volkswagon Beetle, known as the “Fagbug,” to campus on April 5.

Davies will discuss how she turned the story of her vandalized car into an award-winning documentary film and broader outreach campaign, from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. in the Olmsted Building’s Morrison Gallery. A public screening of the film “Fagbug” will be shown from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. in the Morrison Gallery.

Graduate Programs Open House March 31

Penn State Harrisburg, with the largest selection of master’s and doctoral programs in the region, is hosting a Graduate School Open House at 6:00 p.m., Thursday, March 31 in the campus library.
            
The open house will offer the opportunity to meet and talk with faculty, obtain application, registration, and financial aid information, and learn about Penn State Harrisburg’s master’s and doctoral programs. Certificate and certification programs are also available.

Graduate student accepts second national award

Camilla Robinson, criminal justice graduate student at Penn State Harrisburg, has received a second award, the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS) 2011 Master’s Student Scholarship Award, for her research paper, “The Use of Cell Phones in Law Enforcement.”

Veder to present little known view of O’Keeffe March 29

Offering a little known perspective on American painter Georgia O’Keeffe, Associate Professor of Art History and Visual Culture Robin Veder will explore O’Keeffe’s muscle memory challenges and the innovative solutions that kept her painting until she was almost 100 years old.
