Meteorologist Reed Timmer, star of the Discovery Channel’s hit show "Stormchasers," will talk about his tornado-tracking experiences, Saturday, Oct. 22 at 8:00 p.m. in Penn State Harrisburg’s Capital Union Building. The presentation is free and open to the public.
“Stormchasers” follows three teams of professional scientists, whose goal is to literally enter tornadoes and capture footage and measurements. The chasers travel the Great Plains’ “Tornado Alley,” which spans an area of 700,000 miles, to document some of the world’s most violent storms.
Timmer is lead storm chaser for the show’s Dominator Team. First inspired by a severe hail storm at the age of 13, Timmer now drives more than 50,000 miles each year between the Mexican Border and Canada, using his personally crafted armored research vehicle and mobile radar to measure winds at the base of tornadoes. He has documented more than 200 tornadoes, including a 1999 F5 tornado in Oklahoma, and has also documented Hurricane Katrina. Timmer holds a doctorate in meteorology from the University of Oklahoma, is CEO of Weather Fusion, LLC and Extreme Tornado Tours, LLC, and founded TornadoVideos.net, a company devoted to extreme storm-chasing footage and research.
