Yaverbaum named fellow of national accreditation society

Penn State Harrisburg Professor Emerita of Information Systems Gayle J. Yaverbaum has been named a Fellow of the Computing Sciences Accreditation Board (CSAB). 

Yaverbaum was one of two CSAB executive members to be named a Fellow, chosen based on outstanding contributions to the computing profession and education.

Herb garden adds flavor to campus

Students with a keen sense of taste may have spotted a fresh difference in the food on campus lately.

That’s because Housing and Food Services is incorporating seasonings from the campus herb garden into its recipes. In its second season, the garden, on the East side of the Olmsted Building, grows traditional herbs – basil, dill, parsley, cilantro, and rosemary – and vegetables –  lettuce, onions, carrots, cucumbers, and beans, among others.

Graduate School Open House October 11

Penn State Harrisburg will hold a Graduate School Open House, Tuesday, Oct. 11.

Starting at 6:00 p.m. in the library, the open house will offer the opportunity to learn about the college’s 24 master’s and three doctoral programs; meet with faculty; and obtain application, registration, and financial aid information.

Events to support United Way

Penn State Harrisburg announces several events to benefit the United Way of the Capital Region.

United Way Fun Day, free and open to the public, will be held Wednesday, Sept. 28 from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Fun Day events include good food – cheap! – contests, games, raffles, a yard sale, and more.  For information on Fun Day, Erin Mariano at 948-6334 or [email protected].

Trash to Treasure

Campus yard sale to benefit United Way Sept. 17

Penn State Harrisburg will hold the Trash to Treasure yard sale on Saturday, Sept. 17 from 8:00 a.m. to noon at the Alice Demey Elementary School parking lot, Wharton Avenue, Middletown (rain location: Student Center, Capital Union Building, on campus). 

5k Pasta Run/Walk cancelled

The 5K Pasta Run/Walk scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 15 at Penn State Harrisburg has been cancelled. An annual event benefitting the Penn State United Way Campaign, the walk may be rescheduled at a later date. For information, Becky Timmins-Weiler, 948-6211, or Erin Shannon, 948-6505.

Doctoral student receives international essay award

David Puglia, American Studies doctoral candidate, has received the 2011 David Buchan Student Essay Prize from the International Society for Contemporary Legend Research (ISCLR).

To be published in the society’s annual journal Contemporary Legend, Puglia’s winning essay explored a contemporary legend in Maryland known as the Goatman by tracing its folklore roots and promotional attention it received.

Doctoral Programs Information Night Sept. 21

Penn State Harrisburg will hold a Doctoral Information Night on Wednesday, September 21 at 6:00 p.m.

Held in the college library, the session will provide information on the college’s D.Ed. in Adult Education, the Ph.D. in Public Administration, and the Ph.D. in American Studies.

Those attending will have an opportunity to speak with faculty and students in the three programs.
