In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Penn State Harrisburg’s School of Humanities, the Kulkarni Cultural Arts Series, and Sankofa African American Theatre Company will present “The Call of the Crusades,” an original play written by award-winning playwright Sharia Benn. Penn State Harrisburg students also assisted with the writing of the play and will contribute to the cast.
Penn State Harrisburg will host its inaugural MLK Day “I Have a Dream” High School Basketball Classic on Monday, Jan. 20, 2025, on campus. The event will celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. through community, competition and inspiration.
Fabian Vantassell, from Newville, Pennsylvania, will receive his bachelor’s degrees in criminal justice and sociology during Penn State Harrisburg’s fall 2024 commencement ceremony. He shared his journey as a first-generation college student, overcoming adversity to find success on campus.
Penn State Harrisburg offers American Sign Language I and II, and interest in the classes is expected to increase as the college’s communication sciences and disorders program, which began in 2020, grows.
Denis Crawford earned his doctorate in American studies from Penn State Harrisburg in 2020. In 2022, he became the historian and exhibit designer for the College Football Hall of Fame.
The Madlyn L. Hanes Library at Penn State Harrisburg has launched a new exhibition, “Always Aim High! An Exhibition Celebrating Shirley Chisholm,” featuring rare materials from the Alice Marshall Women’s History Collection. The exhibition opened Oct. 22 and will be on display through Dec. 20 at the entrance to Archives and Special Collections on the library's third floor. Chisholm was the first Black woman to be elected to the U.S. Congress in 1968 and the first Black woman to run for U.S. president in 1972.
