Jared S. Rife, lecturer and Ph.D. candidate in American studies at Penn State Harrisburg, received the 2012 William Wells Newell Prize at the American Folklore Society’s annual meeting in New Orleans for his paper on children's folklore. Rife’s article, "Playing with the Sacred: LDS Children's Games for Boredom and Entertainment," also was published in the annual “Children’s Folklore Review.”
Penn State Harrisburg introduces Weekend College, a program featuring classes held two weekends a month and online, to help working adults balance a busy schedule with attending college. Weekend College classes begin in January 2013; an information session will be held on Thursday, Dec. 6 at 12:30 p.m. in the Capital Union Building’s Quiet Study on campus.

This year, each of Penn State Harrisburg’s five academic schools presented an Alumni Achievement Award to one of their graduates who demonstrates outstanding professional accomplishment. Two Penn State Harrisburg students, senior mechanical engineering technology major David Lane, of Candor, N.Y., and senior mechanical engineering major Christopher Topper, of York, have received $1,500 scholarships from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ (ASME) Susquehanna Section.
Selected for their written essays and reference letters, the students received both scholarships awarded by the section for the 2012-13 academic year.

Yuefeng Xie, professor of environmental engineering, has been elected a fellow of the International Water Association (IWA), a global network of water professionals headquartered in the United Kingdom. Xie, of Middletown, was nominated for his research in disinfection byproducts and for his training of water professionals.
Political scientists and public policy experts at Penn State Harrisburg gathered on Nov. 7 to discuss the re-election of Barack Obama. Chief among the lessons learned from the election, they said, was that the face of the electorate in the United States is changing.

U.S. News & World Report has listed Penn State Harrisburg’s undergraduate engineering programs in its 2013 Best Colleges rankings. Penn State Harrisburg was the highest ranked institution in south-central Pennsylvania in the “best undergraduate engineering programs” category for schools where a doctorate in engineering is not offered.
