Mara receives alumni award

Dr. Cynthia Mara, Penn State Harrisburg associate professor emerita of health care administration, has received the 2011 Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Virginia School of Nursing.

Given by the Nursing Alumni Association, the award each year honors one alumnus who has significantly contributed to the nursing profession.

Veder receives Harvard fellowship

Robin Veder, associate professor of humanities and art history/visual culture at Penn State Harrisburg, has received a fellowship at Harvard University’s Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Unique sculptures illustrate chemistry lessons, concern for planet

As a first-year student at Penn State Harrisburg, Leah Wilhelm spent weeks preparing for a Chem 001 test.  She mixed old cardboard in a blender and painstakingly cut empty Mountain Dew bottles (16 of them) into small pieces. She recycled plastic newspaper bags and crafted a mini-tree swing of twine and wood. And, she made construction paper grass.

The result:  An “A” and a contest-winning Earth Day sculpture.

Engineering students design award-winning projects

Designing a firefighter safety monitoring system and a speedy robotic mouse, Penn State Harrisburg Electrical Engineering and Electrical Engineering Technology students earned awards at the annual Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Region 2 Student Activities Conference, recently held at Penn State Erie.

This summer, the Capital Area Writing Project 2011 Young Writers Academy, June 20-24 at Penn State Harrisburg, will help young children unlock the world of fairytales and become writers in the process.

More than 150 information technology professionals from 23 Penn State campuses and colleges gathered at Penn State Harrisburg May 19 and 20 for the University’s Tech Pro Conference, the brainchild of Dr. John D. Hoh, campus technology officer at Penn State Harrisburg, and Dan Mroz, director of information technology at Penn State Mont Alto.
