Capstone projects keep it real

One team of senior mechanical engineering students at Penn State Harrisburg spent eight months designing a device for a real world client. Their project was needed by the company to scale down its 3D printing application for smaller volumes.

Julnes and Woessner named Committee on Institutional Cooperation Fellows

Dr. Patria De Lancer Julnes, director of Penn State Harrisburg’s School of Public Affairs; and Dr. Matthew C. Woessner, 2016-17 University Faculty Senate chair-elect and associate professor of political science and public policy in the School of Public Affairs have been named Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) Fellows. The CIC is the academic consortium of the Big Ten universities plus the University of Chicago.

Writing Project fellows use research from their own classrooms to become better writing teachers

Emily Barton's first grade students came up with the concept “playing with words” on their own after she encouraged them to look at each other's stories and suggest changes. Michele Lacerda said her seventh graders improved their writing throughout the year as they shared their work with their peers. Kaitlyn Myers said her fourth graders became excited about writing when they could use technology that let them publish their work.

Julian elected president of PASFAA

Carolyn A. Julian, student aid adviser and veterans affairs coordinator at Penn State Harrisburg, has been elected as the 2016-17 president of the Pennsylvania Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (PASFAA).

Julian was awarded the Leadership Award in 2011-12 and Distinguished Service Award in 2015. She has been a member of PASFAA since 1987. Julian received her business degree at Penn State Harrisburg and has over 40 years of service in financial aid.

Paper lauded: A paper by Assistant Professors of Criminal Justice Dr. Jennifer Gibbs and Dr. Jonathan Lee, “Race and attitudes toward police: the mediating effect of social distance,” published in Policing: An International Journal of Police Strategies & Management (in 2015, volume 38, issue 2), has been selected by the journal’s editorial team as a Highly Commended Paper in the 2016 Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence.

Cameron Yon

Penn State Harrisburg to “send off” Cameron Yon, headed to NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships

The Penn State Harrisburg community will gather together on Wednesday, May 25 at 10:30 a.m. at the Capital Union Building on campus to send off Cameron Yon as he leaves to participate in the NCAA Championship.  Yon has qualified in the men's discus at the championships being held in Waverly, Iowa at Wartburg College, May 26 through 28. 

Yon is the first Penn State Harrisburg track and field athlete to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
