Students from 16 area schools will meet at Penn State Harrisburg’s Capital Union Building for the 28th annual MATHCOUNTS competition, Saturday, Feb. 4 from 9:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

Students examine equipment at the PPL Electric Utilities Power Laboratory

Penn State Harrisburg engineering students planning careers in the electric utility industry will have an edge on the competition when they graduate, thanks to nearly $200,000 in gifts of software, equipment, and financial support from PPL Corporation and leading electric utility suppliers.  The PPL Electric Utilities Power Laboratory on campus offers students hands-on training with the same equipment utility companies use to control and protect the nation’s power systems.

Structural Design and Construction Engineering Technology senior Paul Zipprich, of Hop Bottom, Pa., received one of eight national Alpha Sigma Lambda (ASL) scholarships. ASL, the national adult honor society, recognizes academic achievements of adult learners who must balance the responsibilities of home and work.

The second Penn State Harrisburg student in three years to win the award, Zipprich received the award for the 2011-12 academic year.
