I started my career as a traffic technician at PennDOT after obtaining an associate’s degree from Penn State Mont Alto. I later took classes on a part-time basis toward obtaining my bachelor of science degree in civil engineering in transportation technology, which I received from Penn State Harrisburg in 1979.
During my career, I worked in a broad range of positions in the disciplines of planning, design, construction, and maintenance. I also worked on many nationwide committees and worked with a number of industry-wide organizations. My Penn State degree provided the background necessary to hold these positions.

My experience at Penn State Harrisburg was excellent. The civil engineering program provides a level of personal attention that you won't find elsewhere. The professors customize the curriculum to ensure that students are being exposed to real life situations, problems and solutions that one might encounter in the workforce. This includes bringing in expert speakers from their industries to review key issues that are facing employees entering the workforce. If I could go back, I would make the same choice: Penn State Harrisburg!
I originally enrolled in Penn State Harrisburg's Civil Engineering and MBA programs because I wanted to get a Penn State degree while learning in a smaller classroom setting. Attending the Harrisburg campus turned out to be a pivotal decision that not only expanded my knowledge, but also opened doors to unprecedented career opportunities.
The exceptional faculty at Penn State Harrisburg played a crucial role in shaping my academic experience. Their expertise, dedication, and passion in these programs were evident in every lecture and interaction. The personalized attention and mentorship I received fueled my intellectual curiosity, fostering an environment where I could thrive academically and grow professionally. Additionally, Penn State's robust network of alumni and industry connections has been a game-changer for me. The University's reputation opened doors to networking events, internships, and job opportunities that I might not have had access to otherwise. The alumni network is a testament to the success of the program and being part of this community has been an ongoing source of support and inspiration. Because of Penn State Harrisburg's reputation and the alumni connections, I was able to secure a job with HRG, who I dreamed of working for since I was a young boy. The skills acquired, the networks built, and the confidence instilled during my time at the University have undoubtedly accelerated my career and provided me with unlimited opportunities. Whether it be in navigating complex projects, mentoring staff, or making strategic decisions, the lessons learned at Penn State Harrisburg continue to influence my career path and allow me to positively impact the community.
I wholeheartedly recommend Penn State Harrisburg to anyone seeking not just an education but a transformative experience that will shape their future. My educational journey has been nothing short of extraordinary, and I am immensely grateful for the knowledge, skills, and connections that have propelled my career to new heights.

I selected a degree in Civil Engineering because it provided me with the knowledge and tools to adequately navigate the construction industry. I chose Penn State Harrisburg because of its size and instructor-to-student ratios. I felt that my classes were more fulfilling because of this. My degree has helped me obtain positions I never thought possible, and has without a doubt opened the doors to a fulfilling career. My advice to prospective students is to pursue studies in scheduling, materials, design and cost analysis.
