The Public Policy major is designed to equip students with the expertise and knowledge necessary to succeed as public policy professionals. The major requirements focus on five foundational courses that introduce students to essential core concepts and skills. American Government (PL SC 001) provides critical contextual knowledge about the U.S. political system. ECON 102 (Introductory Microeconomic Analysis and Policy) and ECON 104 (Introductory Macroeconomic Analysis and Policy) develop proficiency in key principles of political economy. Quantitative Political Analysis (PL SC 309) enhances students' understanding of statistical tools, preparing them to become skilled data analysts. Finally, Public Policy Analysis (PUBPL 304W) serves as a comprehensive course where students learn to analyze, write, and evaluate policies, while also gaining insight into how public policies emerge from complex political decision-making processes.
Additionally, the curriculum includes 18 credits of elective courses, allowing students to tailor their education to their specific interests within the fields of Political Science and Public Policy. Students are encouraged to explore topics such as bureaucracy, state politics, political economy, and public administration. In their final year, students participate in a senior seminar focused on a substantive policy area - such as health policy, environmental policy, or national security policy - enabling them to gain specialized knowledge.
Furthermore, the program offers 32 credits of supporting courses, providing students the flexibility to choose from a diverse array of disciplines, including accounting, sociology, and environmental science, and many more. This component of the curriculum empowers students to create a personalized academic path, with guidance from academic advisers to ensure alignment with both personal and professional aspirations. Students will often use this flexibility to complete one of Harrisburg’s many minors or to build additional professional skills.
