Be sure to refer to the Suggested Academic Plan and consult with your adviser regarding the proper sequence of courses.
Penn State Harrisburg offers programs in both Electrical Engineering Technology (EET) and Electrical Engineering (EE). Both degrees build on a foundation of math and science courses to equip students with the skills they need to excel in electronics. You can explore the differences by comparing the program requirements for EET with those for EE. In short, the Electrical Engineering (EE) program emphasizes theoretical foundations, focusing on the “why” behind technology and designing new applications. In contrast, the Electrical Engineering Technology (EET) degree focuses on the “how,” applying engineering principles to build, test, and maintain systems. Generally, EET majors spend more time getting hands-on experience and less on theory than EE majors.
The EET program provides great flexibility for students who have already completed an associate’s degree program, are transferring from another campus or institution, or are changing majors. With several categories of electives to fulfill, many credits will satisfy degree requirements. (If you are considering transferring credits, you may find Penn State's Transfer Credit Tool helpful.)
This flexibility in course selection also allows students to pursue interests in any of these areas:
- Biomedical Devices and Systems
- Communication Circuits and Systems
- Control Systems and Robotics
- Electronic Circuit Design
- Electric Drives, Power, and Energy Systems Design
Students apply their acquired knowledge and experience to capstone projects and present their projects at the Capstone Design Conference. By carrying a project through its life cycle from inception to final product, students develop core skills and competencies in time management, debugging, practical design and implementation skills, and teamwork.
Our EET alumni hold high-ranking positions at industry-leading companies, driving innovation in energy, manufacturing, telecommunications, and more. If you're considering joining us, please use the Request More Information form.
