35th annual Model U.N. returns to campus Feb. 22 to 24

When the Model United Nations returns to Penn State Harrisburg Feb. 22 to 24 for the 35th consecutive year, participating high school students will not only debate and discuss contemporary world issues, but will return to international topics from 1973.

Faculty seminar to focus on data mining

The next installment in the college Faculty Seminar Series sponsored by the offices of Academic Affairs and research and Graduate Studies will feature a focus on data mining.

Assistant Professor of Computer Science Qin Ding will speak on "Data Mining and Its Applications on Images" from noon to 1:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 19 in the Gallery Lounge.

Jewish scholar to discuss folk narratives in Israel

Penn State Harrisburg’s Visiting Fulbright Scholar from Israel, Dr. Haya Bar-Itzhak, will discuss "In Quest of a Narrative — Ethnography in an Israeli Kibbutz" Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 6:15 p.m. in the Gallery Lounge of the Olmsted Building.

The presentation is based upon research she did for her book, Israeli Folk Narratives: Settlement, Immigration, Ethnicity published by the Wayne State University Press.

NEH grant to support teachers’ study of Benjamin Franklin

The National Endowment for the Humanities has awarded Penn State Harrisburg a $210,000 grant to explore the life and ideas of Benjamin Franklin. "A Rising People: Benjamin Franklin and the Americans" will bring teachers from throughout the United States to historic Philadelphia during the summer of 2007 to explore the sites of America’s founding and study with some of the country’s preeminent historians.

Census Data Workshop coming to Eastgate Center in Harrisburg

The Pennsylvania State Data Center is offering its one-day Census Data Workshop April 12, May 23, and June 21 at the Penn State Harrisburg Eastgate Center.

The cost for the 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. workshop is $99. The Eastgate Center is at 1010 N. Seventh St. in Harrisburg.

Latin Dance classes return February 11

Last year’s Latin Dance classes at Penn State Harrisburg proved so popular with community residents that they are returning again.

The community is invited to join in the fun when the college 3 p.m. Sunday classes Feb. 11, 18, and 25 and Friday, March 2 at 7 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room of the Capital Union Building on campus.

College offers prep course for NEW SAT Exam

A prep course for the New SAT Exam will be offered at Penn State Harrisburg on Saturday mornings from Feb. 17 through March 31.

For students in grades 9 through 12, the course is designed to teach how to effectively apply new strategies to prepare for the comprehensive SAT exam. It will examine and discuss strategic approaches and methodical processes for the critical reading, writing, and math sections through lecture, interactive class discussions, and engaging activities.

Faculty members granted leaves of absence

Leaves of absence have been approved by the University for eight Penn State Harrisburg faculty members. Leaves of absence are granted for purposes of intensive study or research that will increase the quality of the individual’s future contribution to the University. The University has approved these leaves for 2007-08.
