Olympic champion to conduct swim clinic Nov. 10

Age-group competitive swimmers in the area will have the opportunity to receive instruction from Olympic Gold Medalist Josh Davis when Penn State Harrisburg's aquatics center hosts a clinic Saturday, Nov. 10 from 1 to 5 p.m.

Faculty member to assist journalists in Tajikistan

Penn State Harrisburg faculty member Samuel Winch is taking his teaching and research expertise in media ethics to Tajikistan.

Dr. Winch, the coordinator of the college’s undergraduate major in Communications, has been awarded a U.S. Department of State Office of International Programs grant to visit the Central Asian nation in September to speak with journalists, editors, students, and faculty about journalism ethics.

Byerly named chair of Board of Advisers

James C. Byerly, president and CEO of HDH Byerly, has been named chair of Penn State Harrisburg’s Board of Advisers.

Previously vice chair of the board, Byerly will serve a two-year term as chair.

Elected vice chair is Christine A. Sears, senior vice president and chief financial officer at Penn National Insurance. Sears previously served as board treasurer.

The new board treasurer is Richard E. Bentz, president of Edenridge Enterprises.

Annual Data User Conference to focus on community planning

Pennsylvania’s most comprehensive single-day forum for the latest research and developments in demographic data will focus this year on the use of data in community planning.

The annual Data User Conference, hosted by the Pennsylvania State Data Center based at Penn State Harrisburg, will be at the Holiday Inn Harrisburg/Hershey Thursday, September 13. This year’s theme is "Building Pennsylvania Communities: Using Data to Plan the Future."

‘The Nature of Women’ is focus of art exhibit

The work of veteran artist Joanne Landis will be on public exhibit Monday, August 20 through Friday, October 12 in the Morrison Gallery of Penn State Harrisburg’s library.

The exhibit, entitled "The Nature of Women," is free and open to the public Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. An artist’s reception and gallery talk will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6.

College offers food safety training

One supervisory employee in a licensed food establishment must be certified in food safety and sanitation in order to be in compliance with the state’s Department of Agriculture Food Employee Certification Act.

Penn State Harrisburg is bringing courses that fulfill those requirements to Carlisle, Lebanon, Middletown, and New Bloomfield this fall.

College offers engineering review courses in advance of exams

Penn State Harrisburg is offering assistance to engineers and students planning to take the April 2008 Professional Engineering or Fundamentals of Engineering exams.

The college’s School of Science, Engineering, and Technology and Office of Continuing Education are partnering to offer review courses beginning this fall in advance of the April exams.
