Five grads honored by ‘Forty Under 40’ program

Five Penn State Harrisburg graduates are among those honored by the Central Penn Business Journal through its Forty Under 40 program.

The annual program, now in its 14 th year, selects area residents under 40 years of age for their excellence in business, commitment to the community, and professional achievement.

Commission for Women Seeks Participants for Research on Work-Family Balance

Penn State’s Commission for Women is sponsoring a study of parents at Penn State to better understand how they balance the dual responsibilities of work and family in the year following the birth or adoption of a child. Focus groups of tenure-line faculty and full-time staff will be held at the University Park campus and Penn State Harrisburg from November 11–19, 2008. This study is being conducted for research purposes.

Lecture to focus on Hispanic health issues

Community and multicultural health issues, with a particular focus on the Hispanic community, is the topic of the next installment of the year-long Penn State Harrisburg diversity lecture series on November 13.

The presentation by Associate Professor of Health Education Raffy Luquis will be at noon in the Morrison Gallery of the college library. The discussion is free and open to the public. For information, phone 717-948-6180.

America and its pets is topic of November 11 lecture

For most of recorded history pets have played a role in nearly every culture.

“The history of pet keeping has a lot to say about our changing ideas about human nature, about what constitutes a satisfying life,” says University of Delaware faculty member Kasey Grier who has turned her love of animals into an academic and research pursuit.

College teams to compete in regional computer programming competition

For the 16th consecutive year, teams of Penn State Harrisburg students are sharpening their skills in preparation for competition in the world’s most prestigious computer programming competition.

The two teams from Penn State Harrisburg will challenge teams from six other institutions Saturday, October 25 in the regional contest of the 32nd ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest sponsored by IBM at Shippensburg University.

Heard on campus – the lessons of the Little Rock Nine

 

A smile covered the face of Minniejean Brown Trickey as she said, “History is not dead as long as I am alive.”

With that direct statement, Trickey framed her presentation to more than 150 assembled in Penn State Harrisburg’s Student Center as she profiled the historic events in Little Rock, Ark. more than 50 years ago.
