Guest lecturer to explore America’s Barns

John M. Vlach, professor of American Studies and anthropology at George Washington University, will present “Barns Across America,”an American Studies invited lecture, on Thursday, March 22.

To be held at 7:00 p.m. in the Olmsted Building’s Gallery Lounge, the lecture will focus on the Mid-Atlantic region. The event is free and open to the public.

Irish-American Poet To Present Cultural Folktales

Former Harrisburg attorney Dennis Strain will return to the capital region to present an evening of Irish folktales in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day on Wednesday, March 14 at 6:30 p.m. at Penn State Harrisburg. The program, in the library’s Morrison Gallery, is free and open to the public.

Adult honor society chapter inducts 30 students

The local chapter of the Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society inducted 30 new members recently at Penn State Harrisburg.

Alpha Sigma Lambda, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary at the college, recognizes adult students who achieve academic excellence. To be inducted, members must be in the top 20 percent of their class, maintain at least a 3.2 grade point average, be 24 years of age or older and have completed a minimum of 24 graded credits in an undergraduate degree program at Penn State.

Shoup receives regional engineering award

Dr. Jerry F. Shoup, interim director of Penn State Harrisburg’s School of Science, Engineering, and Technology, has received the 2012 Technical Achievement Award from the Central Pennsylvania Engineers Week Council. Chosen for his public, industry, and institutional service, Shoup accepted the award during the National Engineers Week banquet on Feb. 23 in Camp Hill.

STEM Career Launch

Program helps high school students plan STEM careers

An estimated 100 ninth graders from six area schools received an in-depth look at careers related to math and science when Penn State Harrisburg hosted its annual Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Career Launch on Wednesday, March 7.

The program provides students with an understanding of the course work and requirements necessary to pursue higher education programs in mathematics and science-related areas.

Graduate Open House

Graduate School Open House March 15

Penn State Harrisburg will hold a Graduate School Open House on Thursday, March 15, at 6:00 p.m. in the library.

The open house will offer the opportunity to learn about the college’s 24 master’s and three doctoral programs; meet with faculty; and obtain application, registration, and financial aid information. RSVP preferred, but not required.

Award-winning filmmaker to screen documentary on hate and hope

Michael Ramsdell, speaker and filmmaker, will screen his film, “The Anatomy of Hate: A Dialogue for Hope,” on Thursday, March 15 at 6:30 p.m. in the Olmsted Building’s Auditorium, for the next installment of Penn State Harrisburg’s 2012 Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration Lecture Series.

Ramsdell’s documentary explores common ideologies of hate, and how to overcome them. The event is free and open to the public.
