Human trafficking survivor to speak on April 4

Theresa Flores, human trafficking survivor, author, and victim’s advocate, will present “The Slave Across the Street” at Penn State Harrisburg on Thursday, April 4. Two sessions will be offered: 12:00 p.m.-1:15 p.m. in the Library’s Morrison Gallery and 6:00-7:30 p.m. in the Capital Union Building (CUB) Student Center. The presentations are free and open to the public.

Winch to present research on visual stereotypes

Dr. Samuel Winch, Penn State Harrisburg associate professor of communications and humanities, of Harrisburg, will present “Photojournalistic coverage of the Arab Spring: are visual stereotypes evolving?” on Wednesday, March 27 at 12:00 noon in the Library’s Gallery Lounge. Part of the college’s 2013 Faculty Seminar Series, the event is free and open to the public.

Bronner to present family Holocaust saga

Penn State Harrisburg’s Center for Holocaust and Jewish Studies will conclude its 2012-13 calendar of events with a presentation by Dr. Simon Bronner titled “From Auschwitz to America: A Holocaust Family Saga,” 12:00-1:00 p.m., April 9, 2013 in the Gallery Lounge, W-107 Olmsted.

Penn State Harrisburg to hold community egg hunt

The Penn State Harrisburg Lion Ambassadors will host their annual community egg hunt for children 10 years and under on March 28.  Registration will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Olmsted Building Main Lobby, and the egg hunt will begin at 6:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the community.

Bui to present efficient ant-based solutions March 20

Dr. Thang Bui, associate director of the School of Science, Engineering, and Technology, of Hershey, will discuss advanced algorithms inspired by foraging behavior of ants on March 20 at noon in the Olmsted Building Gallery Lounge. The presentation is open to the public.

Undergraduate students participate in literary conference

Accompanied by Assistant Professor of Creative Writing and English Composition Jen Hirt, five Penn State Harrisburg students participated in Susquehanna University’s ninth annual Undergraduate Literature and Creative Writing Conference “Freedom of Thought” on Feb. 18. At the full-day conference, students from around the country present their literary works on differing themes and cultural issues to an audience of fellow writers, teachers, and scholars. Discussion about the intellectual and creative challenges of literary study follows each presentation.

Politics and folklore scholar to speak April 4

Dr. Wolfgang Mieder, professor of German and folklore at The University of Vermont and the spring 2013 distinguished lecturer for Penn State Harrisburg’s American Studies program, will speak on campus April 4 at 7:00 p.m. in the Olmsted Building Gallery Lounge (W-107). Mieder’s presentation, "'Let Us Have Faith that Right Makes Might': Proverbial Rhetoric in Decisive Moments of American Politics," is free and open to the public.

David J. Puglia

Doctoral candidate releases book on regional folklore

David J. Puglia, of Middletown, Penn State Harrisburg American studies instructor and doctoral candidate, tracks through the hills, houses, and hollows of Pennsylvania in his book “South Central Pennsylvania Legends and Lore.” Released by History Press, the book offers a full history of the region, from the folkways of the Pennsylvania Dutch to the rocky relations between German and English settlers and local tribes.
