Student Opportunities

Employment

Penn State Harrisburg Civil Engineering graduates are employed at regional and national consulting firms and by regional governmental agencies.

Internships

Many students, including international students using their CPT, complete summer internships with local governments and local offices of national engineering firms, as well as with state governmental agencies, such as PennDOT.

Teaching and Research Assistantships

A limited number of teaching assistantships are available each year to incoming students.

  • Students must have a competitive undergraduate GPA and strong GRE scores (competitive scores are, at a minimum, a score of 3.0 – 3.5 on the analytical section of the GRE and >80th percentile on the quantitative section).
  • These assistantships are available to full-time students who start in the fall semester.
  • Research assistantships may be available at any time during the academic year and will depend on the number of externally-funded research projects in the department.
  • Research positions paying an hourly wage also may be available.

Research and Professional Development

Students work with 1 or more faculty members to develop a research project suitable for presentation at a regional or national conference. Students have presented their award-winning research at the Penn State Graduate Exhibition and at a variety of regional and national conferences.

The School of Science, Engineering, and Technology annually supports student professional development opportunities. Civil engineering students have attended the regional ASCE meetings, local chapter meetings, and have visited a variety of companies and job sites.

Laboratories

The program has research and teaching labs in the addition to the Educational Activities Building. These labs are devoted to the study of soils and construction materials. In addition, the program has several computer labs for engineering students with advanced modeling software, including building information modeling. As well, the water resources focus area shares laboratory space with the environmental engineering program.
