Teacher Education

Mathematical Sciences (B.S.)

The program is designed to prepare students for employment in business, industry, and government immediately after graduation, but graduate study in mathematics or related disciplines is also a viable alternative. Mathematical modeling is emphasized, and all students are required to take courses in statistics and computer science.

Small classes, excellent faculty, opportunities to work with faculty on projects, and strong employment prospects are among the program's many strengths. Students will be helped to develop: a solid foundation in mathematical studies; an awareness of the utility of mathematics, statistics, and computers; skills in translating practical problems into mathematical terms; competency in the use of modern mathematical tools; problem-solving skills; and an awareness of the importance of mathematics in society.

The variety of course offerings in Mathematical Sciences provide concentrations in various areas such as actuarial science, management science/operation research, statistics, teaching, and preparation for graduate studies.

Secondary Education Option

The secondary education option prepares students to teach middle school and high school mathematics and has been recognized by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and is approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

Professional Licensure/Certification

Many US states and territories require professional licensure/certification to be employed. If you plan to pursue employment in a licensed profession after completing this program, please visit the Professional Licensure/Certification Disclosures by State interactive map.
Degree Conferred: This program is for attaining PA teacher certification.
