College appoints new school director

Penn State Harrisburg has announced the appointment of Dr. Catherine A. Surra as director of the college’s School of Behavioral Sciences and Education.

Surra currently is director of the School of Human Ecology at the University of Texas at Austin. She joined the university in 1989 and has held numerous positions there. In addition to being a full professor, she chaired the Department of Human Ecology and led the effort to advance it from a department to a school.

Heard on campus – Holocaust survival

If not for a dream, Martin Lemelman may not have captured his mother’s story of Holocaust survival in a critically acclaimed book or reconnected with the family he never knew.

An educator, author, and graphic artist, Lemelman brought the story behind the creation of Mendel’s Daughter to Penn State Harrisburg as an installment in the year-long lecture series hosted by the college’s Center for Holocaust and Jewish Studies.

Chiara Sabina presented Coretta Scott King Award

For her efforts to improve the quality of life in the minority community, Penn State Harrisburg faculty member Chiara Sabina has been named the winner of the Coretta Scott King Women for Diversity Award presented by Women Connect magazine.

An assistant professor of social science, Sabina was formally honored at the second annual Women ConnectAwards Celebration March 2 at the Hershey Lodge and Convention Center.

WordFest 2010, a free evening conference for Kindergarten through college educators, comes to the Capital Area Intermediate Unit in Summerdale from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, March 25.

Designed to explore best practices for teaching and encouraging reading and writing, WordFest is sponsored by the Capital Area Writing Project (CAWP) headquartered at Penn State Harrisburg.

Frank LittleBear’s life mission can be summed up in a word – understanding.

A lecturer, musician, artist, and author, LittleBear has dedicated his life to researching and explaining the Native American histories and customs. But through his lectures, he espouses an appreciation of all races and cultures.

Presenter to discuss risk management and ethics

One of the nation’s leading authorities on risk management, Carl Pritchard, will discuss the connection between risk and risk ethics in business when the Keystone Chapter of the Project Management Institute meets Wednesday, April 21 at Penn State Harrisburg.

More than 20 undergraduate and graduate students will explain the results of their academic research to the campus community at the fifth annual Penn State Harrisburg Student Symposium Friday, March 19.

Staffers ‘go red’ for heart disease awareness

To increase awareness of heart disease in women, employees in the Swatara Building recently “went red.”

Donning red apparel, the staff members celebrated the American Heart Association’s “Go Red” campaign focusing on women and heart disease. “More women die of heart disease than all other causes of death combined. More women than men die from cardiovascular disease which is why women need to be aware of their risk factors,” says an edition of The Medical Minute, a service of the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.
