More than books – this spring in the library

This spring, the Penn State Harrisburg library served as more than a student resource center and study hub, playing host to everything from a women’s history collection anniversary celebration to a Jewish photographer’s portfolio and presentation to a classical music recital. Take a look.

Marissa Graby Hoover

Hoover named director of development and alumni relations

Marissa Graby Hoover has been named director of development and alumni relations at Penn State Harrisburg.

A 2000 graduate of Penn State with a degree in elementary education, Hoover joined the Penn State Harrisburg Office of Development and Alumni Relations in 2004 and, since January 2011, had served as its interim director. Previously, she was associate director of development.

Trevor Blank

College awards first doctorate in American Studies

As a Penn State Harrisburg doctoral student, Trevor Blank has received considerable recognition. He has published four books and numerous articles and reviews; received several national awards; presented his research on children’s folklore to widespread audiences; and been featured in several newspaper articles. After Penn State Harrisburg’s May 14 commencement ceremony at Hershey’s Giant Center, Blank will hold another distinction.

Study tour to feature New York museums

Continuing education will offer a one week study tour “Art and Architecture in the 20th Century: Art in New York” on August 1-5. Offered as a non-credit or three-credit course,the tour features visits to New York’s collection of comprehensive and influential museums, complemented by visits to commercial galleries, an auction house, and discussions with artists. A pre-session will be held July 23.

Study tour explores Pennsylvania German culture

Continuing education will offer a one week study tour “Ethnicity and the American Experience: The Pennsylvania Germans –A Living Tradition” on July 11-15. Offered as a non-credit or three-credit course,the tour examines the living traditions of the Pennsylvania German culture and efforts to preserve those traditions; and explores the history and background of the culture through visits to museums and other sites. A pre-session will be held July 9.

Camilla Robinson

New line of duty brought London police officer to campus

When Camilla Robinson took a sabbatical from her job as a London police officer to pursue a master’s degree in criminal justice at Penn State Harrisburg, she wasn’t sure what to expect.  She had studied in the U.S. before, having graduated from Ohio State in 2000, and she is outgoing and adventurous. Still, she said that despite many similarities, the U.S. and her homeland of Great Britain are very different culturally.  She knew that could be challenging.

Rosa Stroh

Hershey executive to deliver commencement address

Rosa C. Stroh, vice president and treasurer for The Hershey Company and a graduate of Penn State Harrisburg’s MBA program, will deliver the keynote address at Penn State Harrisburg’s spring commencement Saturday, May 14. Celebrating its 100th commencement, the college will confer nearly 600 undergraduate and graduate degrees during the 9:30 a.m. ceremony at the Hershey Giant Center.

Golf team earns first NCAA berth in college history

The men’s golf team made Penn State Harrisburg history on April 27 by earning the college’s first NCAA championship berth, while also capturing the NEAC conference championship with a total team score of 612. The Nittany Lions will travel to North Carolina for the NCAA Division III Championship beginning May 7.
