Penn State Harrisburg presents "The Politics of Hip-Hop" Wednesday, December 8 in the Olmsted Building’s Oliver LaGrone Lounge (W-132) from 4:30-6 p.m.
Presented by Yasmin Shiraz, the program will expose sexism, racism, and capitalism in hip-hop culture. Yasmin Shiraz, an empowerment speaker, award-winning filmmaker and author, will teach the audience a new way of looking at hip-hop culture and the media. Refreshments will be available.
The Harrisburg Regional Chamber and Capital Region Economic Development Corporation presented Penn State Harrisburg with the “Stay Invent the Future” Award in recognition of the college’s Harrisburg Semester internship program. The honor was announced at the business group’s annual award celebration on Dec. 1.
Musical events “Around the World in 18 Songs” and “Dueling Pianos International” come to Penn State Harrisburg Wednesday, December 1. Both events are free and open to the public.
In recognition of her volunteer service in central Pennsylvania, Penn State Harrisburg student Sharon E. Zook has received a 2011 Jefferson Award. A Lebanon resident, Zook is in the college’s Applied Clinical Psychology master’s program.
Kevin M. Harter, executive chairman of Saladax Biomedical Inc., will deliver the keynote address at Penn State Harrisburg’s fall commencement Saturday, December 18. Approximately 500 undergraduate and graduate degrees will be conferred during the 9:30 a.m. ceremonies in the Giant Center, Hershey.
Dr. Richard Fiene, associate professor of human development and family studies, received the 2010 National Association for Regulatory Administration President’s Award for his contributions to establish child care licensing as the foundation of a high quality early childhood system. The award was given at the association’s national conference in Cincinnati, Ohio Nov. 16.
Penn State Harrisburg alumnus Kevin M. Harter was recently named Alumni Fellow, the highest award given by the Penn State Alumni Association.
Harter, of Mechanicsburg, was one of 23 Penn State alumni honored Oct. 13 for outstanding accomplishments. Nominated by a college or campus as leaders in their professional fields, Alumni Fellows are invited by the University president to return to campus and share their expertise with students, faculty and administrators.
Penn State Harrisburg’s Alumni Society recently elected new officers and board members. Judy Hricak (1989, Humanities), vice president national practice manager – marketing and business development with Gannett Fleming, will serve as president and succeeds Jessica Gray (1997, Public Policy), executive director of the House Republican Caucus Chairman’s Office. Other new officers include Leslie Meals (1980, Social Science), administrative assistant with Hershey Entertainment and Resort Company, as vice president and Nydia Vazquez (2003, Structural Design and Construction Engineering Technology), project engineer with Clark Construction, as secretary.
Hilda Mantelmacher has made some sense of the time she spent in Nazi concentration camps Bergen-Belsen and Auschwitz. “If you hate, it hurts nobody but you,” said Mantelmacher.
Mantelmacher recounted her experiences from World War II to a crowded Penn State Harrisburg audience Nov. 2.
The Penn State Harrisburg library celebrated its new Abraham Lincoln exhibit with a visit from a special guest. Mr. Lincoln – respected actor and historian James Getty – greeted guests and recounted stories, personal and political, from his life. The event kicked off the opening of “Forever-Free: Abraham Lincoln’s Journey to Emancipation,” a traveling exhibition on display in the library until December 10, 2010.
