Annual MATHCOUNTS event to be held on campus January 26

Students from 16 area middle schools will gather at Penn State Harrisburg’s Capital Union Building for the 35th annual MATHCOUNTS competition on Saturday, January 26, 2019 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A nationwide program that involves more than 500,000 sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students, MATHCOUNTS is designed to build mathematics skills, promote strategic problem solving, and instruct students in dealing with complex problems.

The regional event on campus includes a Sprint Round, Target Round, Team Round and Countdown Round, where the top 10 individual mathletes compete. The Countdown Round and the concluding Award Ceremony are open to the public. The competition is run by the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers with help from Penn State Harrisburg faculty, students, and staff and Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC) faculty.

The event is a partnership between Penn State Harrisburg, the Harrisburg Chapter of the Society of Professional Engineers, and HACC. It supports the college’s community outreach and spurs interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) related careers.

The snow date for the event will be Sunday, January 27. For more information, contact Jeanne Miller at [email protected] or 717-948-6081.
