Mission, Vision, Objectives and Outcomes

Program Mission Statement

The mission of the Electrical Engineering Program is to build a leading program of exceptional teaching, innovative research, and dedicated service by maintaining a strong curriculum, highly qualified and committed faculty, outstanding facilities, and the essential funding required to meet program needs.

Program Vision Statement

The Electrical Engineering Program will remain the premier regional electrical engineering degree and will be among the best nationally.

For our EE Graduates: Penn State Goals and ABET Objectives

The EE Program is preparing graduates for careers as engineering professionals where they will be able to:

  1. Apply their knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering to technical, market, and societal problems in the workplace.
  2. Utilize acquired skills and tools to solve complex problems and pursue further studies, professional licensure and workplace challenges.
  3. Seek and pursue professional growth, attain greater societal awareness, exhibit ethical conduct, and embrace lifelong learning.
  4. Thrive in the workplace through strong skills in new technologies, communication, teamwork, management, and professional conduct.

For our EE Students: Penn State Objectives and ABET Student Outcomes

Students in Electrical Engineering at Penn State Harrisburg will demonstrate:

  1. An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
      1. Ability to Apply Engineering Skills. – Device, system, or process analysis.
      2. Ability to Apply Engineering Skills. – Device, system, or process modeling.
      3. Ability to apply engineering skills. – Device, system, or process simulation.
      1. Ability to Apply Natural Sciences. – Chemistry
      2. Ability to Apply Natural Sciences. – Physics
      1. Ability to Apply Mathematics. – Calculus
      2. Ability to Apply Mathematics. – Differential Equations
      3. Ability to Apply Mathematics. – Linear Algebra
      4. Ability to Apply Mathematics. – Statistics
  2. An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.
    1. Develop a set of specifications that define the objectives.
    2. Recognize legal, ethical, and political responsibilities.
    3. Plan products based on established technical standards for safety, quality, compatibility, and sustainability.
    4. Conceive products in light of market forces.
    5. Conceive products in light of end-users’ quality of life.
    6. Acknowledge operating conditions’ impact on performance.
    7. Define questions and/or develop a functional diagram needed to propose a solution.
    8. Weigh tradeoffs between various circuit and system characteristics.
    9. Integrate solution methods to solve complex problems.
    10. Confirm conformance and efficiency of finished products.
  3. An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
    1. Use and comprehend appropriate terminology.
    2. Write effective reports, laboratory notebooks, and proposals.
    3. Present data effectively in graphical and tabular form.
    4. Use analogies and/or graphics to enhance discussion of complex topics.
    5. Deliver cogent oral presentations.
  4. An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
    1. Discuss the IEEE Canon of Professional Ethics.
    2. Show awareness that engineering decisions affect the health and safety of the public.
    3. Consider energy efficiency in design of a project.
    4. Select sustainable practices for manufacture and use of a product.
    5. Contrast advantages and disadvantages of emerging technologies.
    6. Acknowledge current & emerging legislative and/or market forces.
  5. An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
    1. Function as a team leader as well as a member.
    2. Collaborate using professional manners.
    3. Responsibility for research, development, and reporting.
    4. Conduct an After Action Review (AAR).
  6. An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgement to draw conclusions.
    1. Design experiments to investigate pertinent device, circuit, or system characteristics.
    2. Use appropriate simulation tools to obtain predicted results.
    3. Conduct experiments using appropriate test instruments and procedures.
    4. Obtain data within predicted range of accepted results.
    5. Relate and articulate data to experimental objectives.
  7. An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
    1. Aware of need to engage in life-long learning.
    2. Demonstrate information literacy.
    3. Use of human networking.
