Program Objectives and Outcomes
Objectives
The Mechanical Engineering program educational objectives meet the needs as identified by constituents that include the Technical Advisory Board, alumni and faculty. The program faculty will provide and continuously improve a curriculum so that our graduates will:
- Work in industrial and governmental organizations that create, design, improve, and maintain sustainable and environmentally-considerate products, processes, and systems that are integral to national and international economies.
- Assume positions of leadership and responsibility within an organization.
- Participate on multi-disciplinary teams using state of the art computer-based methods in design, simulation and analysis of products and processes.
- Progress through professional licensure and/or advanced degrees in engineering, business, and other professionally-related fields.
Student Outcomes
- Ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex Engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
- Ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
- Ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgements, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
- Ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
- Ability to develop and conduct appropriate experiments, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgement to draw conclusions.
- Ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
Program Mission
The mission of the Penn State Harrisburg Mechanical Engineering (ME CA) Program is to prepare undergraduate students for successful careers in mechanical engineering-related organizations. Through the integrated efforts of faculty, staff, and administration, the Mechanical Engineering Program’s mission remains consistent with the missions of the University and College.
Program Vision
Mechanical Engineering will be the premier regional mechanical engineering degree program and will be among the best nationally. The Program is founded on scientific principles, utilizes state-of-the-art equipment and software, requires effective oral and written communication, and responds to changing conditions in the profession. As effective educators, our faculty members engage in scholarly activities in order to stay current and pursue research initiatives in various fields of expertise. The Mechanical Engineering Program prepares students to meet changing industrial and professional needs, and it will be revised proactively to meet those needs.
