The Penn State Harrisburg Diversity and Educational Equity Committee (DEEC) honors Dr. Martin Luther King's memory by sponsoring the design contest each year. The contest accepts student-submitted graphic designs related to a theme.

The theme for the banquet, which honored King’s life and legacy of service and social justice and recognized the impact of local community members, was “Champions for Social Justice, Equity, and Inclusion: A Tribute to Leaders and Their Leadership.”
