For the first time, Penn State Harrisburg selected six graduates to serve as student marshals at the spring 2019 commencement ceremony. The graduates bore the banners representing each academic school, and together with the faculty marshals led the graduating students during the ceremony processional.
The Syrian refugee crisis was just beginning in 2012 when, on a whim, Lydia Williams she picked up a book called “The Syrian Rebellion” by Fouad Ajami. It changed her life. Now a senior political science major at Penn State Harrisburg, Williams traveled to Turkey this year to study the plight of the refugees through the Turkish Heritage Organization Summer Research Program.
Shaun L. Gabbidon, distinguished professor of criminal justice in the School of Public Affairs at Penn State Harrisburg, was recently honored with the 2019 Academy Fellow Award at the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences Award Luncheon on April 4 in Baltimore, Maryland. Fewer than 40 scholars have received this distinction.
Penn State Harrisburg faculty and staff will discuss their works, published during the past year, at the college’s annual Celebration of Book Publishing and Artistic Accomplishments on March 21 at 3 p.m. in the Olmsted Building Gallery Lounge.
On Feb. 21 and 22, Penn State Harrisburg’s International Affairs Association and Rotaract Club will host the 47th annual Model United Nations conference. The two-day event provides central Pennsylvania high school students the opportunity to discuss and develop solutions for major international issues and concerns while promoting a greater understanding of the United Nations.
The School of Public Affairs hosted the first Student Research Day in October 2018. The day-long event was hosted by graduate assistants in library Morrison Gallery on campus and consisted of various workshops, including what makes a research poster visually appealing, what skills to utilize when presenting a poster, and how to develop a research proposal and disseminate the results.
