Graduate School Open House Oct. 10

Penn State Harrisburg will hold a Graduate School Open House on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 6:00 p.m. in the library.

The open house will offer the opportunity to learn about the college’s more than 30 master’s, doctoral, and certification programs; meet with faculty; and obtain admission requirements and financial aid information. RSVP preferred, but not required.

Attendees receive an application fee waiver!

RAINN Day events raise awareness of sexual violence

Penn State Harrisburg will hold several events as a part of RAINN Day, an annual campaign sponsored by the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN) to raise awareness and fight against sexual violence on college campuses. 

Jen Hirt to discuss her creative essay, “Glow in the Dark”

Jen Hirt, M.F.A., assistant professor of creative writing and English composition, will discuss, “Glow in the Dark,” her 2012 Gabehart Prize for Nonfiction winning creative essay about bats, glow sticks, rejection, and revision on Wednesday, Sept. 25 from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Olmsted Building Gallery Lounge.

Personal safety a top priority at Penn State Harrisburg

As students continue to settle into college life and their studies in the new academic year, personal safety and security should also be a top priority.  For many new students, this is the first time they have been responsible for their own safety.  By adopting simple safety measures and knowing what college resources are available, students will be well equipped to keep themselves and their belongings safe.

Night-time habits shed light on daytime behavior

In graduate school, Dr. Kimberly A. Schreck met a 14-year-old boy with autism who changed her life.

The boy didn’t just sleepwalk – he threw furniture out of second floor windows while sleeping. Schreck began wondering whether the boy’s sleep deprivation contributed to his aggression.

“Nobody had ever looked at that,” said Schreck, now professor of psychology and program chair of social sciences and psychology at Penn State Harrisburg.

Her graduate school advisor said, “You’ll spend your career working on this.” He was right.

In his second book about the relationship between China and the United States, John Haddad, associate professor of American studies and popular culture at Penn State Harrisburg, provides a colorful narrative history of how China and America first met, focusing on the lives and experiences of American traders, missionaries, and adventurers as they traveled to a foreign land unaware that the United States even existed.

Panel will examine performance-enhancing drugs and sports

Penn State Harrisburg will host an Academic Perspectives on Current Events discussion on “Sports Records:  Before and After Performance-Enhancing Drugs” on Wednesday, Sept. 11 from noon to 1:30 p.m. on campus in the Olmsted Building Gallery Lounge.
