Writing academy at Penn State Harrisburg offered to area students

The 2014 Young Writers Academy (YWA) will be held June 23 to 27 from 9 a.m. to noon at Penn State Harrisburg.

A week-long summer program for writers in grades 1 through 12, the program offers students the opportunity to extend their writing skills beyond the classroom while meeting and working with other writers.

On March 28, 1979, the worst accident in commercial nuclear power history in the United States started unfolding at the Three Mile Island (TMI) nuclear power plant outside Middletown, PA.

Penn State Harrisburg receives $1.87 million grant to build K-16 teaching and learning capacity

Dr. Jane M. Wilburne, associate professor of mathematics education in Penn State Harrisburg’s teacher education program, has received a $1.875 million Eligible Partnership Project grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The three-year award supports partnerships with and professional development opportunities for local school districts to provide innovative, research-based, approaches to improve student teaching experiences.

More courses added to summer schedule

Penn State Harrisburg has added more classes to its summer schedule, including online classes English 202C and 202D. Other additions include courses in education, math, engineering, and science.

Penn State Harrisburg students’ design project displayed at national competition, premiere of latest Ken Burns film

Students in Craig Welsh’s Advanced Graphic Design class at Penn State Harrisburg this semester constructed an 8' x 42' panorama of the text of the Gettysburg Address, which they crafted out of cardboard boxes and painstakingly hand-cut each letter.  The panorama made its world premiere at the recent National Gettysburg Address Competition, where it served as the backdrop.

Xie is 2014 recipient of Penn State Faculty Outreach Award

Yuefeng Xie, professor of environmental engineering at Penn State Harrisburg and Middletown, PA resident, has received the 2014 Penn State Faculty Outreach Award.

The award honors faculty who have positively and substantially affected individuals, organizations or communities through problem solving or development as a result of extending their scholarship.

Penn State Harrisburg to honor Louise Hoffman with memorial bench

To honor the many contributions of the late Dr. Louise Hoffman, associate professor of Humanities, Penn State Harrisburg’s School of Humanities will dedicate a memorial bench on Friday, April 4 at 9:30 a.m. on Vartan Plaza near the campus bookstore.

Dr. Hoffman was a dedicated faculty member in the School of Humanities, from 1985 until her death in 2010.  She taught courses in history and humanities, about which she was passionate.
