Labs and Facilities

Multipurpose Biology Laboratory I (TL107)

This laboratory is used to teach Biology 110, 230 and Microbiology 107, 202. The 1372 square foot space features a six-foot biological safety cabinet, two chemical fume hoods and 8 snorkel extractors. With multiple incubators, rt-PCR, gel imagers and refrigerated centrifuge, the lab is well designed to conduct microbiological, molecular and general biological teaching and research. The lab has one teaching and 12 student stations equipped with dissection and compound microscopes and horizontal and vertical gel electrophoresis systems.

Multipurpose Biology Laboratory II (TL112)

This laboratory is used to teach Biology 220, 240 and Anatomy and Physiology 162, 164. Over 1300 square feet of space, featuring 12 student stations with snorkel extractors and one instructor/demonstration table. The lab contains 12 computer stations for simulations and collecting real time data acquisition with biology and physiology sensors.  Biological sensors include dissolved oxygen, CO2 and atmospheric O2, spectroscopy, and temperature. Physiology sensors include EKG, Heart Rate, Respirometers, and Dynameters. The lab has one teaching and 12 student stations equipped with both dissection and compound microscopes. Multiple anatomic models (Torso, skeletal and organs) surround the room and enhance the hands-on learning experience.

General Chemistry Lab (TL115)

This 1267 square foot lab is used to teach Chemistry 111 and 113. The lab utilizes 12 student workstations. All stations have computers with real time data sensors including pH, ORP, conductivity, pressure, gas chromatography, colorimetry and spectroscopy. Multiple precision and analytical balances permit students to conduct gravimetric and other analyses. Additional equipment includes melting point apparatus and vacuum filtration.

Organic and General Chemistry Lab (TL116)

This lab is used to teach both general and organic chemistry (over 1300 square feet). In addition to the 12 student workstations, the parameter of the lab is lined with chemical fume hoods. Analytical instrumentation includes nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectrometry.

Civil Engineering Materials/ Environmental Laboratory (TL 165)

Civil Engineering 475 is taught in this lab in combination with research focused on the environment. The nearly 1300 square foot lab features a 2-gallon-per-minute design flow drinking water treatment plant used specifically for teaching and research purposes. Multiple gang-stirrers (jar testers) in combination with the drinking water plant demonstrate the principles of dosing (coagulation), flocculation, sedimentation, and filtration used in water treatment and engineering treatment design. Analytical instrumentation includes spectroscopy, turbidity, pH, ORP, conductivity, and various colorimetric paraments.
