‘Black Jew Dialogs’ entertains, teaches

The history and absurdity of prejudice and racism will come to the Penn State Harrisburg Tuesday, Sept. 22 in the form of the two-actor play entitled The Black Jew Dialogs.

The 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. performance, drawing from the American Black and Jewish experience, is free and open to the public in the Olmsted Auditorium on campus. For information, phone 717-948-6273

Communications major earns adult honor society scholarship

A Penn State Harrisburg student is one of only eight in the nation to win a scholarship sponsored by the Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society.

Alpha sigma Lambda, the national honor society for adult learners, awards the scholarships based on academic achievement, scholarship, leadership activities, and need.

5K run/walk to benefit United Way

A 5-kilometer “pasta run/walk” to benefit the United Way of the Capital Region comes to Penn State Harrisburg Thursday, Sept. 17.

Sponsored by San Giorgio, the race, entirely on campus and open to both runners and walkers, will kick off at 6:15 p.m. from the front of the Capital Union Building. The course is a combination of grass, trails, and paved surfaces.

Constitution Day panel discussion September 17

Penn State Harrisburg will celebrate Constitution Day Thursday, Sept. 17 with a discussion on “The Constitution and Homeland Security and Defense.”

The event is free and open to the public in the Morrison Gallery of the college library beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Community Swim Day September 12

The Aquatics Center at Penn State Harrisburg is hosting a Community Swim Day from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12 with all proceeds going to the United Way.

The event includes a $5 admission fee and will feature the Nittany Lion mascot and Penn State Harrisburg cheerleaders available for photographs. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Alumni Society, Chapter partner for freshman send-off

Area residents headed for their first semester as Penn State students at locations across the Commonwealth were given a fun-filled send-off August 9 on the Penn State Harrisburg campus.

The Harrisburg Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association and the Penn State Harrisburg Alumni Society partnered in the first-time effort by inviting all Penn State-bound students from the Harrisburg region to campus for an afternoon of food, fun, and plenty of advice.

The more than 60 students who attended Shanelle Gabriel’s spoken word performance on campus recently, got more than an evening of Stacks Stage entertainment. The enthusiastic crowd also received a number of lessons in life.

Scholarships offered for ESL certificate study

Full scholarships are now available to schoolteachers enrolling in Penn State Harrisburg’s statewide English as a Second Language certificate program.

Supported by a federal grant program entitled ESL SCOPE (Secondary Content Online Preparation Program) and launched a year ago, the certificate program is now available on-line to more effectively meet the needs of pre-kindergarten through grade 12 teachers across the Commonwealth.
