This course provides a brief overview of the history, art, architecture, religion, and culture of Paris, from its earliest days until the present time. Combining in-classroom lectures, onsite visits, and student research, the goal of the course is to provide the student with a basic understanding of the City of Light, including its history, its art, and its architecture. Free time will also be available for personal exploration to sample the food, the culture, and the vistas of this most interesting city.

Course Registration

To register for course credit:

  • Meet with your academic adviser to discuss how this course will impact your educational progress. Have your adviser sign a drop/add form to add this class. Forms are available at
  • Contact the travel agency (contact information on back panel) to make a deposit or pay the total cost of the trip and obtain a receipt. Take your signed drop/add form and travel agency receipt to the Office of the Registrar in the Swatara Building to complete enrollment.

Course requirements

  • Mandatory pre/post-trip meetings, group reading, journal, etc., during spring 2018 semester.
  • Students must be free of any current conduct reviews or conduct sanctions. Eligibility will be verified, and each participant grants permission for verification by the Office of Student Conduct.

Travel Awards

Award funds are available to undergraduate honors students through the Penn State Harrisburg Honors programs. The University also has funds for students traveling internationally. For details, visit and select the “Scholarships and Grants” link. A limited number of travel awards are available through the Penn State Harrisburg Office of International Programs. Itinerary and all visits are subject to change without notice.

  • Day 1 – Friday, March 2
    Departure from the Harrisburg campus for Newark Liberty International Airport at 12:00 p.m. Check-in at United Airlines counter terminal C, should be no later than 3:45 p.m. Flight UA #57 leaves for Charles de Gaulle Airport, Paris, France at 6:15 p.m.
  • Day 2 – Saturday, March 3
    Arrive at Charles de Gaulle Airport at 7:35 a.m. Assistance and transfer to your hotel combined with a guided orientation tour of Paris. The guide will show you the main landmarks of the French capital and explain how to use public transportation, buy subway tickets, and exchange money. Check-in at hotel is after 2:00 p.m.
  • Day 3 – Sunday, March 4
    After breakfast, a morning walking tour with your guide. Meet your guide under the Arch of the Caroussel, near the Louvre for the visits of today: The Louvre Museum (entrance fee and group reservation are included), the Arènes de Lutèce, the Panthéon (outside view and history only). Spend the afternoon exploring Paris on your own.
  • Day 4 – Monday, March 5
    Following breakfast, a morning walking tour with your guide. Meet your guide at the Cluny Museum for the visits of today: Cluny Museum (entrance fees included), Notre Dame Cathedral, the Sainte Chapelle (entrance fees included). Spend the afternoon exploring Paris on your own. You may choose to go out and stroll around the famous flea market at the Porte de Clignancourt (only open on Sundays and Mondays).
  • Day 5 – Tuesday, March 6
    After breakfast, a morning guided excursion to Versailles. Your guide will meet you at the hotel to go to Versailles with a private coach (group reservation and entrance to the Palace are included). Time to see the gardens after the visit of the Royal Apartments. Spend the afternoon exploring Paris on your own.
  • Day 6 – Wednesday, March 7
    Following breakfast, morning sightseeing with guide. You will leave by coach for the following visits: Parc de la Villette, Cité de la Musique, Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie (outside view and history), Palais Garnier (inside visit), Opéra Bastille and Place de la Bastille (outside view and history), Sacré-Coeur de Montmartre, walking tour of Montmartre where the tour ends. Return to hotel using your own public transportation.
  • Day 7 – Thursday, March 8
    After breakfast, a guided walking tour. Meet your guide at the Orsay Museum (entrance fee included). Walk through the Tuileries Garden to see the statues of Maillol and reach the Orangerie (entrance fee included). Walk along the Champs-Élysées to take line one metro to La Muette, then walk 10 minutes to the Marmottan Monet Museum (entrance fee included). In the afternoon, a visit to the Quai Branly Museum will take you, if you wish, around five continents.
  • Day 8 – Friday, March 9
    Following breakfast, the guide will meet you at the hotel and you will leave by coach for the following visits related to contemporary art: a short walk in the streets of la Butte-aux-Cailles in the 13th district to see the famous “street art,” The Louis Vuitton Foundation (entrance fee included), The Georges Pompidou Center (entrance fee included) to see the permanent collection. In the afternoon you can visit the area called “Le Marais” on your own, close to the Pompidou Center.
  • Day 9 – Saturday, March 10
    Full day to see more of Paris, do some shopping, see another art museum, and finalize your academic work.
  • Day 10 – Sunday, March 11 Return
    Early breakfast and departure from the hotel at 6:00 a.m. for your transfer to Charles de Gaulle Airport. Check-in at United Airlines counter at terminal 1 no later than 7:15 a.m. Flight UA #56 leaves Charles de Gaulle Airport at 9:25 a.m. and arrives Newark Liberty International Airport at 1:25 p.m. Upon arrival, meet your driver and coach to return to the Harrisburg campus.

Visas are not required for United States citizens traveling to France. All international students are responsible for determining if a visa is required and should immediately apply for the visa. Please check the website at Refunds cannot be made if a visa is not issued. Also, alert the International Programs office if you are applying for a visa.

Trip Registration

Deposit: $500

$150 of this is a non-refundable processing fee to Celestial Voyagers. Your deposit will assure your reservation with the airline, the hotel and other suppliers. The deposit must be sent with a copy of your passport as soon as you register online.

Send your deposit as soon as possible, prior to November 22, 2017. After this date, space may not be available and a supplement may apply.

Balance due no later than January 17, 2018.

All payments by check must be made to Celestial Voyagers.
Payment Methods to Celestial Voyagers:

  • Online: During your registration, you can submit your payment by e-check or by credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express). There is a 3 percent service fee for all online payments.
  • Phone: Celestial Voyagers accepts credit card and e-check payments by phone. Credit card payments incur a 3 percent service fee but there is no service fee for e-checks.
  • Post Mail: Your third payment option is to mail in a paper check or money order. Checks should be made payable to “Celestial Voyagers” and mailed to the address in the “Contact Celestial Voyagers” section.

Cancellation penalties:
In case of cancellation, penalties will apply. All cancellations must be received in writing.

  • Written cancellation received before November 27, 2017 will incur a $150 fee ($150 processing fee).
  • Written cancellation received between December 1 - January 4, 2018 will incur a penalty of $500 (loss of full deposit).
  • Written cancellation received January 5 – January 15, 2018 will incur a penalty $1,375.00 (50 percent of the total trip cost)
  • Written cancellation received on or after January 15, 2018 or no-shows incur a penalty of 100 percent of the total trip cost – $2,750

Course registration is separate from trip registration.

Upon receipt of your deposit, Celestial Voyagers will send you a receipt that you must present at the Penn State Harrisburg Registrar’s office to register for the course.

If you intend to travel internationally, apply for your passport immediately. Failure to provide passport information may delay airline ticketing for our group.

Celestial Voyagers' terms are based on contracts with airlines, hotels and other suppliers. The terms and stipulations mentioned below are bound by these contracts and will be strictly enforced. A passport valid until September 12, 2018 is required.
