Set up and Manage Project

Set up and Manage Project

Congratulations on receiving funding!  Below are a number of resources to help you set up the accounts and manage the project.  Contact our office if you have any questions about these or other aspects of setting up and managing your project.

Account setup: Staff in the Office of Research and Outreach will setup the research account in conjunction with the Office of Research Accounting at University Park upon receipt of the grant award statement or a request for an advance fund.  Generally advanced funding is only provided if there is an agreement in process at the time of the request and only for an amount of funds needed for the first 6 months of the project.

Financial management: The principal investigator (PI) is responsible for the financial management of his/her project.  Staff in the Office of Research and Outreach, upon the commencement of the project, will provide a comprehensive overview of the approved budget with the investigator as well as the budget assistant for your area.  The PI can track the expenditures and funding, plus see other aspects of their projects using MyResearchPortal.  Sign on is the regular on-line sign on for Penn State web applications.

Progress reports: It is the responsibility of the Principal Investigator to submit any progress reports in a timely fashion to the sponsor as outline in the award notification/agreement.

Request for project extensions and requests for supplemental funding: Please contact staff in the Office of Research and Outreach in a timely fashion (preferable at least 90 days before the project end date) if you anticipate that you would need to have your project extended.

Managing your grant: The Principal Investigator must manage the project once funded. This includes being judicious in reporting milestones, managing expenses, working with subcontractors, etc.  Alterations/deviations from the approved project must be reported to the staff in the Office of Research and Outreach which will determine the appropriate actions needed to make the necessary adjustments.  The PI can track the expenditures and funding, plus see other aspects of their projects using MyResearchPortal.  Sign on is the regular on-line sign on for Penn State web applications.

Responsibilities of Principal Investigator: We invite you to review the information contained on the “Office of Sponsored Programs - Post Award" which will give you a thorough review of the grantmaking process within our University setting. Furthermore, it will provide more details in regards to your responsibilities as a principal investigator.

Presenting your results: Several institutional platforms exists where you can present your work including our faculty seminar series, the Research Week on campus in April as well as opportunities at University Park. Contact us to find out more.

Support for book publishing: When possible, the Office of Research and Outreach (ORO) will make limited funding available to assist faculty with the costs for academic publications or other academic productions. Of necessity and within the criteria listed in the application instructions and form, limited funds will be available on a first-come-first–served basis and should be matched form other sources. Application and Instruction form - Online form to be developed)
