Capstone Course (3 credits)

  • P ADM 594 Capstone Course

    The capstone course for Master’s degree students in the MPA and iMPS in Homeland Security Base Program. The course builds on the knowledge components and skills students have gained in prior courses. The purpose of P ADM 594 is to develop additional competencies in problem identification and problem solving, professional writing and oral presentation, and group research and presentation skills.

Electives (15 credits)

With assistance from their faculty advisors, students select 15 credits of electives courses. These electives may be chosen to obtain a broad base in general public administration or to concentrate in one of the following focus areas offered by the MPA.

Students are not required to select a focus area and may choose courses that are of special interest to their career. The focus area does not appear on a transcript; however, it can be noted on a resume. Possible focus areas with relevant course selections are provided below:

  • Public budgeting and financial management
  • State-local government and administration

Human Resources

This focus area provides professional development for students interested in human resources. Topics covered include management, planning, policy analysis, and consulting. Possible relevant courses are suggested bellow:

Nonprofit management

This focus area is designed to provide professional development opportunities to students interested in management and leadership positions in the nonprofit sector. It aims at developing an understanding of the functioning of the nonprofit sector for social and economic development in collaboration with government agencies and local community.
