Jim Talalai currently serves as Select Medical Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer (COO). Based in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, Select Medical is a leading provider of specialized health care encompassing long-term acute care, inpatient medical rehabilitation, outpatient physical rehabilitation and contract therapy. At present, the company has more than 31,000 employees and operates hospitals and outpatient clinics throughout the United States. Since its founding in 1996, Select Medical has received recognition as one of the Best Managed Companies in America by Forbes and as a Best Place to Work in Pennsylvania.
As Chief Operating Officer, Jim oversees operations across all Select Medical business lines. He works closely with both divisional leaders and functional department heads to ensure clinical quality and operational efficiencies that further establish Select Medical as a post acute-care leader and provider of choice. He also is a guiding force behind The Select Medical Way, a company-wide initiative designed to create enhanced patient and employee experiences that differentiate and elevate the organization. With a tenure spanning 15-plus years, Jim has played a key role in the dynamic growth of Select Medical through strategic acquisitions, collaborative joint ventures and organic growth.
Jim joined Select Medical in May 1997 as Director of Information Services. During his time with the company, he was promoted to Vice President, then to Senior Vice President & CIO, and eventually to Executive Vice President & CIO. In January of 2012, Jim was named Chief Operating Officer of Select Medical.
Prior to his tenure with Select Medical, Jim was Director of Information Technology for Horizon/CMS Healthcare Corporation from 1995 to 1997. He also was employed at Continental Medical Systems, Inc. in the mid-1990s. Earlier in his career, Jim held development positions with PHICO Insurance Company and with Harrisburg HealthCare.
Jim received his bachelor’s degree in business administration - management science from Shippensburg University. He also holds a master’s degree in information systems from Penn State University. Active within his profession and the community, Jim currently serves on Penn State University – Harrisburg’s Board of Advisors, and on the Technology Council of Pennsylvania’s Board of Directors. He is a past member of the Federation of American Hospitals’ Health IT Task Force and was previously involved with the Program Development Advisory Group for IT in Health Care at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology.
