Penn State Harrisburg teacher education programs will host a meeting for school administrators and faculty to examine Common Core States Standards on Tuesday, April 23 from 9:00-10:30 a.m.

A system developed to provide consistent and clear guidelines for student learning, the Common Core States Standards use teacher, parent, and community leader suggestions to build on existing state standards. Forty-five states, including Pennsylvania; the District of Columbia; and four U.S. territories have already adopted the standards.

Media-imposed perceptions of beauty, environmental technologies, sleep and behavioral disorders, and English literature are among the broad array of topics that eight Penn State Harrisburg Honors Program students will discuss during the college’s spring 2013 thesis presentations, Thursday, April 18, 11:45 a.m.-1:20 p.m. in W-132 Olmsted and Friday, April 19, 1:00-2:30 p.m. in W-107 Olmsted.

Young Writers Academy

Young writers eager to practice their storytelling will discover new tools this summer at Penn State Harrisburg’s Young Writers Academy, June 24-28, from 9:00 a.m. until noon on campus. Registration is now open.

A weeklong enrichment program for writers in grades 3-12, the academy is instructed by local teacher consultants, fellows of the National Writing Project, a national organization that strives to improve students’ writing and learning, specifically, by professionally developing teachers of writing.
