Crime Prevention Alert: Phone scam targeting students

Two Penn State Harrisburg students have reported to University Police that they have received calls while at their off-campus housing unit from someone identifying themselves as a police officer, saying that they had a warrant for the students’ arrest and demanding that they pay a sum of money in the form of prepaid credit cards to avoid arrest.

The callers also had some personal information about the students that is publicly available (e.g. Penn State e-mail address, major, etc.) in an attempt to make this phone call seem more credible.

Please be alert to this type of illegal activity. Students are reminded that no police agency would ever request money or credit cards from students, nor serve a warrant over the phone.

Anyone with questions or in need of additional information is asked to contact University Police at 717-948-6232.
