Seong Mae Ryoo earned her Ed.D. in TESOL (Teaching English to the Speakers of Other Languages) from Temple University where she focused her work on the relationship between a teacher's written comments and students' writing proficiency. She received her M.S.Ed. in Educational Linguistics at the University of Pennsylvania and M.A. in English Literature and Linguistics at Busan National University in Korea.

Seong Mae Ryoo teaches English Composition ESL including ENGL 83, ESL 15, ESL 5, and ESL 116G/ENGL 497 at Penn State Harrisburg. While in Korea and at Temple University in Philadelphia, she taught courses in linguistics, Academic Writing, and Business English. She was twice the recipient of the Excellent Teacher Award from the First Year Writing Program at Temple University. She also participated in the research at ETS (Educational Testing Service) that investigated the patterns of writing errors for different L1 groups. Her research interests focus on second language writing (L2 writing), assessment of L2 writing, methodology in teacher response research, statistical analysis of the relationship between teacher written comments and writing improvement, linguistic and conversational analysis of teacher written comments, linguistic error patterns of English writing by L1 backgrounds.
