Young Writers Academy

Young writers eager to practice their storytelling will discover new tools this summer at Penn State Harrisburg’s Young Writers Academy, June 24-28, from 9:00 a.m. until noon.
A weeklong enrichment program for writers in grades 3-12, the academy is instructed by local Teacher Consultants, Fellows of the National Writing Project, a national organization that strives to improve students’ writing and learning specifically by professionally developing teachers of writing.

Divided by grade, this year’s writing workshops include:

  • “Creating a Collection of Poems” – Students in grades 3-5 will write different types of poems based on their experiences.
  • “Science Fiction & Fantasy: It’s Out of this World!” – Students in grades 5-8 will build characters and develop stronger science fiction stories.
  •  “The Art of Short Fiction” – Students in grades 9-12 will develop fictional characters, plots, and conflicts, and complete an original short story.

The workshop is a program of the Capital Area Writing Project, the local site of the National Writing Project, dedicated to improving the use and instruction of writing for teachers of all grade levels. For registration and additional information, visit http://citl.hbg.psu.edu/cawp/youngwriters.cfm.
