Young Writers Academy
Young writers eager to practice their storytelling will discover new tools this summer at Penn State Harrisburg’s Young Writers Academy, June 24-28, from 9:00 a.m. until noon.
A weeklong enrichment program for writers in grades 3-12, the academy is instructed by local Teacher Consultants, Fellows of the National Writing Project, a national organization that strives to improve students’ writing and learning specifically by professionally developing teachers of writing.
Divided by grade, this year’s writing workshops include:
- “Creating a Collection of Poems” – Students in grades 3-5 will write different types of poems based on their experiences.
- “Science Fiction & Fantasy: It’s Out of this World!” – Students in grades 5-8 will build characters and develop stronger science fiction stories.
- “The Art of Short Fiction” – Students in grades 9-12 will develop fictional characters, plots, and conflicts, and complete an original short story.
The workshop is a program of the Capital Area Writing Project, the local site of the National Writing Project, dedicated to improving the use and instruction of writing for teachers of all grade levels.
