Cultural Connections: Celebrating Diversity, Writing, and Poetry

Janet Wong

Poetry has the potential to nurture empathy, foster compassion, develop critical consciousness, and encourage human agency. She will share her path to becoming a writer and poet, read aloud poetry, and discuss how poetry has the capacity to educate the heart as well as the mind.

Janet Wong has published more than 30 books for young people, including picture books, novels, poetry, and professional resources. She is the recipient of many distinctions including the International Literacy Association’s Celebrate Literacy award and the Lee Bennett Hopkins Award Honor for Poetry.

Wong’s longstanding commitment to the profession includes service to the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Commission on Literature, the NCTE Excellence in Children’s Poetry Award Committee, the NCTE Children's Literature Assembly Board, and the International Literacy Association’s Notable Books for a Global Society Committee.
