Master of Arts in Community Psychology and Social Change
Based on the intersection of psychology and sociology, the Master of Arts in Community Psychology and Social Change emphasizes leadership, community development, social activism and public advocacy. The program equips students to address multifaceted problems facing communities. Students learn to assess problems and to plan, implement and evaluate solutions at community and organizational levels. Learning takes place through coursework, fieldwork, and an individual master’s project customized to the student’s area of interest.
As a community leader, the student will assess public needs, understand the impact of community structures upon individuals and explore the techniques best suited to initiate productive solutions to various social issues. Graduates of this interdisciplinary program will be able to approach problems from a more integrated point of view and work cooperatively with individuals, service agencies, formal and informal community groups, and other organizations to find practical solutions. Issues related to crime, violence, education, child and family development, employment, immigration, social justice, climate change, social power, race, gender, LGBT issues and other factors are approached from a perspective of individual and community well-being.
Students are prepared for careers in most workforce sectors, including, but not limited to:
- social services
- public health
- the environment
- community education
- community counseling
- social justice activism
- non-government organizational (NGO) development and administration
- criminal justice
- community-based research.
Most current students work full-time in agencies or governmental units. To accommodate working students, required 500-level graduate courses are scheduled in the evening.
