Coach Brown is a native of Scotland where he played professionally for 15 years, most notably with Glasgow Rangers. After injury forced him to retire from playing he turned to coaching, working with professional youths, as well as being head coach at the semi-professional level. Upon his arrival in the USA, he coached at Elizabethtown College as an assistant with the men’s team winning an MAC championship and a trip to the NCAA playoffs. He also worked with the women’s team the year they made the final four.
For the 2007-08 season, Brown will be serving as head coach for both the men’s and women’s soccer teams at Penn State Harrisburg.
Following his stint at Elizabethtown, he became the men’s head coach at Dickinson College, where he turned around an ailing program, taking them from bottom to mid table and competitive, with an ECAC quarter final appearance. During this period, he was also head coach of the Hershey High School girls soccer team, compiling a record of 54-21-8 over a four-year span winning one division championship, runners up twice, three trips to districts and one appearance in the state playoffs. In 2004 he took over the boys program at Hershey High School compiling a record of 17-7, winning the district three title (the first trophy in the history of the program), and taking the team to the state quarter finals. In his first season at Penn State Harrisburg, the team finished with a record of 10-4, taking his team to a division title and the semi-final of the conference playoffs. He brings with him a wealth of experience at both the collegiate and professional levels, and also coaches some of the local youth teams in Hershey (Hershey Youth Soccer Association). Coach Brown also works with the Derry Township and West Shore Recreation departments running soccer clinics, and is also active in the ‘Special Olympics’ soccer events. He holds the UEFA ‘A’ license from Scotland and intends to pursue his USA qualification in the near future.
Coaching Philosophy
It is vital that ‘the beautiful game’ of soccer is played the way it’s meant to be played, simple yet attractive, disciplined yet creative and always passionate. I want the game played in such a manner that, win or lose, people walk away having been entertained with quality soccer from quality players who understand what the game is all about. The only way I can make this happen is to ensure that the foundation skills are continually strengthened, advanced and built upon through dedication to player and squad development.
I fully believe in providing the players with the necessary tools to ‘do the job’. The coaching staff will then sharpen those tools for each and every player, maximizing their effectiveness on both the practice and game fields. I wholeheartedly believe in the importance of the players buying into the program and its philosophy and of holding each other accountable for actions on and off the field, consequently placing them in a position of ownership and responsibility. I would then expect this ‘additional responsibility’ to be a factor in their development not only as student athletes, but as young adults.
I expect my players to take a serious view of how academics and athletics work in conjunction with each other, and of the importance in finding a balance in both aspects of student life. I believe that those players who are succeeding in the classroom are more clearly minded to fully focus on the soccer field, and are therefore the players who are consistently giving 100% plus. As a consequence those players who live by this doctrine ultimately reap the benefits, providing the program with boundless possibilities.
